Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor,
The Committee of Public Safety (or the Committee of terror as I'd like to call it), is not what this country needs right now. Only a year after our revolution, and we had replaced one tyrant with another, Maximilian Robespierre. We still have a major food shortage, and the bakeries are now state controlled. My family is hungry. Even now I'm risking my life writing this to you, because it opposes the revolution. People are being executed everyday if they even just mention a whisper of opposition to the revolution. This revolution is a failure. - Jean Pierre,25,Paris
Dear Editor,
Mr. Robespierre is a genius. He truly is as people say "the incorruptible". As an average citizen of the 3rd estate I am finally able to be involved in the political aspect of the government. The people have their voices now. The policies and laws that have been enacted are having a tremendously positive effect on my life. Now that taxes are based on income, and there is free public assistance for the poor, I can finally get back up on my feet again and get involved in trades. Mr. Robespierre is arresting people who do not have French citizenship. This is perfect because it keeps the rabble out of France. Mr.Robespierre has instilled a sense of nationalism that has been sorely missing these past few years. - Francois Dumont,38,Paris
Dear Editor,
My cousin who is a member of the 2nd Estate had something to say about Mr.Robespierre. He works in the Committee of Public Safety so I cannot give away his identity. Mr. Robespierre is a poor leader and a manipulative and deceiving man. He constantly tries to sentence people to the guillotine that haven't been even convicted of a crime. He is power hungry. Also he usually arrests or executes his opponents, or people that even decide to stand up to him. He also is a poor debater. Recently a woman tried an assassination on his life. He had then decided to double the number of public executions, without any consent from the Committee. He had also allowed the execution of anti-revolutionaries who are only suspected of being one, without need the need of a trial. This has led to much backlash against him from other members of the Committee. When he tries to dispute arguments he loses, or gets shouted down. This man is a monster who has executed thousands of people. He must be stopped. - Jacques,50,Paris
